Show features abstract works of pioneer artist
A solo exhibition of veteran sculptor Chen Gukui is undersay at the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute.
Born in 1943 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, Chen has been sculpting for several decades. He used to be the dean of the institute, and rose to fame through a series of abstract forms.
The exhibition displays 130 of Chen’s works, varying from sculpture to paintings and ceramics.
Two of his sculptures showcased on the first floor, which were created in 1979, are considered some of the earliest abstract works in Shanghai.
Beside Chen’s art, the exhibition also features some historical materials and documents to give a better understanding of Chen.
