Spotlight on making a life in big city
WU Nien-jen’s renowned play “Taipei at Midnight” is being staged in Shanghai later this month.
The play will be performed in Mandarin from January 22 to February 2 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.
The acclaimed work premiered in the Hokkien dialect in Taiwan in 2007 and was a huge box office success.
“Taipei at Midnight” tells the story of three young people who go to work at an ironworks in Taipei 40 years ago, and tells the story of their lives over the four decades that follow.
“Many people who leave their hometown and come to work in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou for a better life will find it strikes a chord, and Taipei in the 1970s was very similar,” Wu said.
The actors performing in Shanghai will be the original cast, including renowned actresses Kay Huang and Lin Mei-hsiu. Wu himself is directing the Mandarin version.
Wu, a well celebrated scriptwriter, director and author from Taiwan, is a leading figure in cinema there and often called “the best storyteller in Taiwan.”
He has received the four Golden Horse Awards for Best Original Screenplay, as well as one for Best Adapted Screenplay.
He made his directorial debut with “A Borrowed Life” in 1994, which earned him the Grand Prize at the Torino Film Festival, and directed “Buddha Bless America” two years later.
Wu has also written the scripts for more than 80 films.
Directing a play is different to directing a film, said Wu.
“It’s real joy and great sense of achievement when you see the audience laugh or cry, something you don’t get to see when filming,” he said.
“It’s using the most genuine performance on the simplest platform to create something that’s the most sincere.”
