The changing tokens of love over the decades

CHRISTMAS and New Year’s celebrations at the Daning Music Plaza, which are running until January 14, feature diverse elements of romance, music and art.

An exhibition of old “love tokens” of the 1970s and 1980s is presented to evoke nostalgia about the city’s time-honored love stories.

In the 1970s, a watch, a sewing machine, a bicycle and a radio were the four must-have gifts for newlyweds. In the 1980s, people turned to fridges, TVs and washing machines. With rapid economic development, wedding gifts have become more expensive.

This exhibition of items and photos provides an insight into the marriage customs of past decades.

There are a musical carousel and old Shanghai alley games and toys which are all but memories for many people these days.

Famous local delicacies and snacks such as spring rolls, rice dumplings and scallion pancakes are also available.

The Daning Music Plaza is also collecting traditional Shanghai slangs, idioms and Shanghainese romantic lyrics from the public to highlight the distinctive culture of the city.
