Uncovering the world’s mask culture
AN international mask exhibition is on view through November 18 at the Shanghai Mass Art Center.
The exhibition, which is organized in part by the International Mask Arts & Culture Organization (IMACO), features nearly 1,000 masks from all over the world, including Japan, India, Thailand and the US.
It also includes over 200 masks from China’s Guizhou and Yunnan provinces.
“The aim of this exhibition is to protect and pass down cultural traditions, and mask culture is obviously one such tradition,” said Chen Shenglai, head of the Shanghai office of the China International Institute of Cultural Studies, which cooperated on bringing the event to Shanghai.
According to Chen, the exhibition is scheduled to travel to Kunshan in Jiangsu Province, Yuhang in Zhejiang Province and Fuzhou in Fujian Province.
Established in 2006 in Andong City, South Korea, the IMACO now has 56 member countries. The aim of the organization is to collect, protect, display and study masks.
