Yanni brings ‘eclectic fusion of ethnic sounds’ to Shanghai

Visionary pianist, producer and composer Yanni returns to Shanghai next month, bringing with his well-known eclectic mix of musical genres.

Born in Greece, as Yiannis Chryssomallis, and professionally known as Yanni, the 64-year-old multi-gold and platinum-selling artist continues to use the musical shorthand he developed as a child — blending jazz, classical, soft rock and world music to create instrumental works.

Yanni was a founding member of the US rock band Chameleon and started his solo career in 1984.

Yanni’s popularity increased in the mid-1980s.

His album “Reflection of Passion” sold millions of copies while “Dare to Dream” and “In My Time” were both nominated for Grammy Awards.

From the late 1990s the artist continued to release predominantly instrumental albums, such as the deeply personal and introspective “If I Could Tell You,” and “Ethnicity.”

After a reflective time, Yanni experimented going in another direction.

He collaborated with several young artists of various nationalities who created songs from his works and incorporated a variety of exotic instruments to create music that has been called “an eclectic fusion of ethnic sounds.”

Owing to his influence around world, Yanni is dubbed a “true global artist,” and his music is reviewed to reflect his “one world, one people” philosophy.

After performing at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Yanni will bring his eclectic sounds to Shanghai and continue his tour in America.
