“Transcendence” a joint exhibition featuring pieces created by Shi Zhiying, Xie Fan and Yan Bing, is being showcased at the museum of Shanghai Oil Painting & Sculpture Institute through March 23.
Established in 1965, the institute was the first professional art organization devoted to oil paintings and sculptures created after the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Over the years, many of China’s most celebrated artists have been affiliated with the institute.
The museum of the institute is widely known for its serious academic approach in exploring art concepts and techniques. The exhibition “Transcendence” is no exception.
In this joint exhibition, the three young artists tried to look at nature.
According to Su Dongdong, curator of the exhibition, “Nature has different images on its canvas, but each of them finds a similar spiritual power.”
The spotlight of the exhibit is on Shi Zhiying. Born in 1979 in Shanghai, Shi graduated from the oil department of the Fine Art College at Shanghai University in 2005.
On one canvas, Shi depicts sea waves. However, as opposed to the pleasant azure blue sea that sometimes overlaps with the sky, Shi reflects the sea before the storm. The dark and mostly grey tableau conveys a message of violence, mystery and terror. The sleepy water doesn’t appear tranquil or peaceful, but seems to hide the roaring waves about to come.
Shi fuses an incredible strength and calmness to control the whole tableau.
Unlike Shi, Xie Fan, born in 1983 in Jiangyou, Sichuan Province, uses a semi-transparent, silky base for all of his creations. Through the concerted use of light, silk, picture frames and oil paint, a physical space for diffuse reflection is constructed.
For Yan Bing, nature is seen in farming tools in the sunlight. He realistically paints various simple farming tools, as if he’s paying tribute to a plain, agricultural society.
