A grand new spa at Swissotel Grand
SHANGHAI has a plethora of top-quality spas and health centers, offering services and treatments that help one rest, rebalance and revitalize.
Most top hotels also offer spas as part of their luxury facilities, and checking out hotel spas' signature treatments is always a treat.
The Spa & Fitness in Swissotel Grand Shanghai, in the city center, is designed with pampering in mind. Step into the spa and there's a reassuring atmosphere of elegance and tranquillity.
With six treatment rooms and a relaxation lounge, the spa offers services from traditional Chinese massage, to a special selection of body and facial therapies to improve the balance of mind, body and spirit. It offers an arsenal of treatments to cope with today's hectic world.
I opted for the one-hour Signature Massage especially created by the spa. Customers first choose their preferred fragrance from an array of eight, such as lemongrass, rose, and mint; this is mixed with the body massage oil.
As I entered the immaculate, exotically Oriental treatment room, I felt wrapped in a cocoon of total relaxation.
First came a welcome foot ritual - a Chinese "foot soak" using Tibetan saffron that cleanses and stimulates blood circulation. The courtesy with which I was treated throughout made the experience all the more special.
The Signature Massage uses aromatherapy based on Western fragrance studies to calm and balance the energy. The therapist used both relaxing Swedish massage techniques and Chinese techniques that stimulate the meridians, the energy pathways of the body.
The whole body from scalp to toes benefited from the percussion and kneading movements. Tension melted away as yin and yang energies were rebalanced by an intuitive touch. Mind and body were restored to harmony.
The deep pore cleaning facial that followed was recommended by the spa and fitness operations manager Steven Zhang. The complete and personalized facial treatment utilizes June Jacobs facial care products, which are formulated with high-quality botanical extracts.
The Swissotel spa is the first in Shanghai using June Jacobs products for women customers. The botanically based line of products contain pure plant and flower extracts to soothe, rejuvenate and pamper the skin, as well as the senses.
The facial included deep cleansing, exfoliation, facial massage, face mask, and care cream application. The delightful natural fragrance helped to awaken my senses during the one-hour treatment.
The spa carefully chooses skin care products from Comfort Zone for men's facial. Men said they liked the unfussy, masculine, olive-green packaging, the matte, pewter plastic bottles with the refreshing, lemony scented products.
In addition to the must-have signature treatments, the ambience has been carefully orchestrated to soothe, calm and slow down one's momentum to receive the full benefits of the spa rituals.
