Proponents cite hardier plants, higher yields, pest- and disease- resistance, herbicide resistance, lower water requirements, possibility of enrichment with vitamin A, among others.
They say 20 years of commercial growing demonstrate that GM foods are safe and have not been shown to damage health.
Critics say it’s dangerous to tinker with genes and warn that the long-term health and environmental effects and possible harm are not known.
