A British chef’s take on chicken and eggs
CHICKEN & Egg is a new neighborhood gathering spot perfect for sophisticated yet approachable American fare for comfort-seeking locals.
Located on the corner of Fumin and Changle roads, the place took over the old space of Citron that belonged to the Shanghai Brewery Group. So far, it’s proving to be a great change.
It’s hugely popular during lunchtime since it opened a month ago. The concept is straightforward: chicken and eggs are basic ingredients for the delicious comfort food. Pull up a stool at the outdoor space or settle into the comfortable sofa chairs inside the cozy eatery for large plates and drinks.
Executive British chef Justin Birmingham said the menu is designed to appeal to people searching for a great breakfast, satisfying lunch or yummy dinner. Previously from a Michelin 2 star restaurant in the United Kingdom, Birmingham created the dishes to suit individuals and families who care about their health and the origin of their food. “We are not frying any of our chicken. Our roast chicken and wings are high protein, low fat, moist, well-seasoned and flavorful. And we source all of our products from organic farms and vendors,” Birmingham said.
The star dish is definitely the roast chicken. You can choose breast or thigh meat with a choice of two sides at 69 yuan. After being marinated for 16 hours, the bird is tender and juicy. Chicken is never re-heated and there are no heat lamps either, Birmingham said. “Basically, the roast chicken is prepared fresh for each order,” he said.
The roast chicken comes with a selection of nine home-made sauces catering to different tastes. A specialty piri piri sauce or the ginger sweet chili sauce is ideal for the Asian palette.
Birmingham created them to match with the roast chicken and each sauce is freshly made every day.
Besides the chicken, I tried avocado and egg on toast (50 yuan), which comes with pesto aioli, fresh avocado and guacamole and is topped with a poached egg. It’s a great option for a healthy breakfast.
While Chicken & Egg is focused on health and flavor, there is definitely a chance for diners to indulge. Sandwiches, a selection of over a dozen sides, including mashed potato with butter cream and spring onion, roast cauliflower with white sauce and glazed carrots are also on the menu.
For desserts, there’s American Red Velvet Cake, Macadamia Nut Pie and a selection of cheesecakes with different flavors.
Milkshakes and smoothies are worth a try as well, especially the Bailey’s Cream Spiked Vanilla Shake (60 yuan), which, despite being rather pricey, is thick and tastes delicious.
Cocktails include the Yard Chick (49 yuan), a refreshing drink with slices of fresh ginger, ginger liqueur, mango juice, lime juice and green tea. The Sky Is Not Falling (49 yuan) is citrus infused vodka base with Malibu coconut liqueur, apple and orange juice.
