Add flavor with sesame salt
Sesame salt is a dry seasoning common in Hebei and Henan provinces, made with two simple ingredients: white or black sesame seeds and salt.
It is different from pepper salt, which has Sichuan pepper for a bolder flavor. Sesame salt has a purer taste and smells like lightly stir-fried sesame seeds.
Sesame seeds are rich in fiber, protein and Vitamin E. They also contain antioxidants.
There are plenty of ways to enjoy sesame salt. Sprinkle it over a salad, baked potato, steamed vegetable or lo mein for an extra layer of flavor.
Sesame salt is used to make steamed twisted buns, a salty staple food that rolls a layer of the sesame salt before twisting the dough to form the bun.
If you want to experiment with something more, sesame salt can also be used to make sushi or bread, given that light, salty flavor goes with almost anything.
Where to buy: Ole’ supermarket has Hall’s Sesame Salt in the Chinese seasoning section. The product is manufactured in Zhumadian, Henan Province and packaged in air-tight, easy to pour containers, each weighs 220 grams.
The black sesame salt is 26.9 yuan (US$4.3), and the white sesame salt currently sells for 19.5 yuan.
Comment: This product is not as salty as the usual homemade version, making it more versatile. The sesame is clean and crushed nicely without ruining the texture, and no additives or preservatives are used.
