Aerosmith in first China concert

August has been lucky for Shanghai, which has seen some famous bands perform. One of the must-see concerts is Aerosmith, four-time winner of the Grammy Best Rock Band. The group will appear next Wednesday at Hongkou Football Stadium in their first performance in China.
The American hard rock band was formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1970 and will appear as part of its “Global Warming World Tour.”
Their style, which is rooted in blues-based hard rock, has come to also incorporate elements of pop, heavy metal and rhythm and blues, and has inspired many rock artists.
It is sometimes referred to as the “Bad Boys from Boston” and “America’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band.”
“China is a great country with history and culture. I am delighted and surprised that we have many fans in China, although we have never performed in China before,” says Tom Hamilton, the band’s bassist, through an e-mail interview.
“When our manager told us that we have an opportunity to come to China, doing a solo concert, all of us were very excited. We did not hesitate to accept the invitation, because we really have been waiting for this for a long time,” he said.
In the Shanghai tour, since time is limited, the band will not play all their classic songs.
“It’s hard to figure out exactly which song makes the audience the most satisfied. But we know what performance won’t let fans down,” Hamilton says.
The band will perform well-known songs with electronic elements. Numbers in the new album “Music from Another Dimension” will also be featured.
“I think the music and the way people experience it are changing. Now people are listening to music when they are waiting for a bus, taking the train or walking. When I was young, I had a new record, put it onto a player. Just that way,” Hamilton says.
Tyler’s knee problem
“I don’t really have a feeling which is better. I just think music has ability to enhance your life. Whatever you are doing, music can affect your life. But one thing is always the same, that is, when the band is with audience, the exciting atmosphere does not change,” he says.
Chinese fans have been concerned about Steven Tyler, the athletic front-man vocalist who is scheduled for knee surgery and who has been grappling with his long-in-the-works debut solo album.
“My knee is giving out,” Tyler told Rolling Stone. “I had ACL reconstructions, and in November I’m getting knee replacement surgery. It’ll take me about three or four months to recover ... I’ve had so many operations on my knees and feet that just to be standing is a miracle.”
In Hamilton’s eyes, Tyler is amazing.
“He is a really unselfish performer ... His knees have a little problem, but he still can do a great job,” Hamilton says. “We are sure to bring an excellent performance to the city. We all have been looking forward to it for a long time.”
Even Hamilton says he has not heard any songs from Tyler’s debut album yet and he thinks it is “a secret.”
“We all have ideas for songs. They may be too different for the band. I know a lot of song ideas which I like, but sometimes they can’t be delivered on the band’s records,” says the bassist. “I also want to hurry up to finish my own album. After the band’s tour, I will go into my solo album production.”
While looking forward to the concert in Shanghai, Hamilton also says the band has an interest in Chinese rock music.
“It’s a good opportunity to get to know how rock music is developing in China,” he says. “We want to meet some Chinese rock bands during this tour. I also look forward to hearing Chinese rock music. It must be very amazing and stylish.”
