Artists explore modern dilemmas

“EVERYDAY Legend,” an exhibition featuring works from 19 artists, is currently on display at Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum through December 7. The multi-media show presents paintings, sculptures, installations and animation.
According to Jiang Jiehong, one of the curators, “This research-based curatorial project aims to probe Chinese culture from the perspective of contemporary art in order to further investigate and mirror the evolution and inheritance of the cultural threads, and to reveal the cultural dilemmas that are faced by China today.”
The highlight of the exhibition goes to “Snow Cover” created by Liang Shao-
ji. Liang is a well-known figure in contemporary Chinese art who has engaged himself for decades. He combines silk threads with willow branches, both of which are seen as symbols of life, to create a site of ruins in the “forest snow.” With the covering of the silk threads, a wintery scene emerges. Underneath the “snow,” imagery of a lost hometown, the high-rises and viaducts of modern cities, computer software, broken pieces of antique porcelain and unspeakable forms are weirdly woven together, but only in vague forms.
“In this way, an archaeological site of the past, present and future was constructed,” Liang explained.
Another prominent piece at the exhibition is “Concealed Rock” created by Zhan Wang. Since 1995 Zhan has designed stainless steel rockeries with an aim to reinterpret traditional Chinese culture and demonstrate the process of urban industrialization. “Artificial Rock,” one of his most well-known rock works, is also on view. But this time “Concealed Rock” goes deeper by using a transparent material similar to artificial crystal.
