Authentic Hong Kong barbeque pork relocated
TSUI Feng Garden was originally located in the IAPM mall on North Shaanxi Road, but they were forced to change locations and to temporarily close their doors. Now, Tsui Fung Garden has settled into its new home on the 3rd floor of MidaoFood Plaza where it is serving up the same Hong Kong classics that loyal patrons love.
The only indication of its origins is a series of black and white photographs of Hong Kong. The floor and walls are plastered with newspaper themed tiles and wallpaper. I was greeted at the door by the owner, Laurence Leung, a jovial native of Hong Kong. Laurence moved to Shanghai to escape the SARS epidemic ravaging his home and then met his wife on the mainland. He found that no one in Shanghai could make proper barbeque pork, a Cantonese delicacy, and one of Leung’s personal favorites. He decided to take matters into his own hands and opened Tsui Fung Garden.
The restaurant may have been established for the purpose of bringing authentic barbeque pork to Shanghai, but it has evolved to encompass the full gambit of Hong Kong flavors. The menu includes a variety of classic dim sum options, as well as other traditional Hong Kong dishes like clay pot rice and daily options of various Cantonese soups. The main attraction of the restaurant is the rice bowls, one of Leung’s original creations. The original rice bowl concept is rice topped with fried onions, a fried egg, greens, and a large helping of the main attraction: barbeque pork. Now, Leung has added two additional options, one with spice, and one served over rice mixed with vegetables. At 42 yuan a piece, these bowls are a steal when it comes to value for money. The restaurant also has a lengthy list of mainland Chinese dishes featured in their lunch specials, which include a dish, rice, and drink for 38 to 48 yuan. They are also incorporated into their 4-person set menu, which will run guests somewhere between 168-208 yuan.
I tried the dim sum selection which included mustard buns and the mushroom roll-ups. The mushroom rollups are another of Leung’s innovations — their crunchy filling and nutty mushroom flavor soon made them a favorite of mine. Although there was a bit of a wait, I did get to try the famed barbeque pork rice. Leung’s barbeque is rich in flavor, and the combination of all the ingredients over rice is perfect for a quick and easy lunch.
Tsui Feng Garden brings authentic Hong Kong flavors to Shanghai. The wait staff was swamped when I came in, so the wait is forgivable.
