Bang bistro opens at Grand Getaway
AUSTRALIAN chef Craig Willis recently extended his personal stamp in Xujiahui with the opening of Bang bistro and café at Grand Getaway.
Amid the vast choices of cuisines on offer in Shanghai, Willis continues to offer what he believes — nice simple meal in a relaxed, casual ambience.
Bang is the extended concept based on his namesake restaurant, Mr Willis, which is tucked away on the top floor of a building on Anfu Road that also houses other Wagas family of restaurants including Baker & Spice, La Strada and Mi Thai.
Since the arrival of Mr Willis, the Australian chef has gathered a group of admirers in the city who appreciate his way of cooking and his restaurant vibe. The first Bang opened at the iapm mall that got good feedback from his old customers and new guests, most of them locals.
He picked Grand Getaway to open his second Bang outlet.
“I want to bring something fresh to the area that is filled with more old-school dining spots and food chains. Locals living around Xujiahui are looking for casual yet modern international flavors as well,” he said.
“Bang is a casual eatery which brings the quality of Mr Willis to a much wider audience in the shopping malls. Our menu is written to allow for a variety of ‘uses’ — a simple quick pasta sandwich or pizza for lunch in the café or a more serious meal of oysters, seafood and steak in the bistro. We also provide a short, smart yet good quality wine list,” Willis said.
On a recent visit for a Sunday brunch, the bistro was packed with families and young couples. The weather was still a bit chilly so the colorful outdoor verdant with plants was empty. However, it will soon become a lovely outdoor environment for dining in the warmer days.
What struck me the most was the hip interior theme — a greenish tropical style wallpaper, the industrial element tin roofing material on the walls, oil drums as lights and reclaimed flooring to keep an informal fun edge to the interior. Willis said it reminds him of a farm shed from his childhood, added the beautiful Danish chairs and the warmth of wood. Willis wanted the interior to exude a joyful, vacation type of vibe that one can separate from the daily grind. As with his other restaurants, this one too has an open kitchen. One can watch the team of chefs busy preparing the dishes.
The big space is divided into two areas: bistro space for dining and a café area for a juice/coffee and desserts. Fresh ingredients and the right cooking techniques define the concept of Bang. The menu has an international appeal. The best sellers are the handmade pastas, seafood stew, Australian steaks and the all-time favorite Mr Willis roast chicken.
I went for the waffle with chicken, avocado, mushroom, crunchy peanut (68 yuan) from the weekend brunch menu, and Prosciutto, goat cheese, artichoke bruschetta (78 yuan) from the a-la-carte menu for a simple but decent Sunday brunch. It was accompanied by the super food smoothie “Green Man” and a barista coffee from the Australian “Superior Blend” beans.
