Beer festival brews up a good time

BEER and lots of it. What’s not to like?

More than 100 beers from over 24 countries, a great selection of international food and more than a dozen DJs will gather at Shanghai International Beer Festival from April 18 to 20.

Taking place at Wharf 1846 near the Bund, the event is in its third year and being organized by Bevex, a big-scale event organizer.

“We expect to draw 30,000 people to celebrate beer and fun in the springtime,” says The Minh Nguyen, general manager of Bevex. “This year, we’d like to take it to the next level.”

The event attracted 23,000 visitors last year, 9,000 more than the first festival in October 2012.

The 5,000-square-meter space at Wharf 1846 will be divided into four areas, each featuring a distinct atmosphere: “The Lounge” with an indoor dining area; the “Entertainment Area” with games; the scenic “Riverview Seating Area;” and the “Main Stage Area” with a direct view of the DJs and bands.

The Shanghai International Beer Festival awards will be handed out during the event.

“It’s a great opportunity to shine the light on the development of imported beers and local craft beers,” Nguyen says. “This competition will be hosted in accordance with international brewing standards and many international judges will be represented in the panel.”

Beers will be evaluated by blind taste tests. They will be judged on aroma, flavor and finish.

The competition will take place on April 18 and 19. The gold, silver and bronze award winners will be announced on April 20.

With theme “come for a beer, stay for the fun,” visitors can taste a variety of beers while testing out their cowboy or cowgirl skills on the mechanical bull and play beer pong among other activities.

Featuring cutting-edge light and sound, the event also gathers music talents from both Shanghai and abroad. This year, DJs and electronic music artists will be in the spotlight. Confirmed acts include Kick the Gong Around DJs, DJ Sal, and DJ B.O, with plenty more still to be announced.
