Bite-sized fun at dumpling festival
THERE is a lot to do in Jiading District - gobble up the famous xiaolongbao dumplings, stroll in newly opened Tanyuan Garden and enjoy the mild autumn weather.
The 2011 Shanghai Nanxiang Xiaolong Festival will begin on September 29 in Nanxiang Town and run through October 28.
Nanxiang xiaolongbao are famous for their thin dough skins and juicy fillings. They are considered a Shanghai delicacy.
The festival's theme is "Xiaolong Makes Life Delicious."
The event will begin with 10,000 people eating xiaolongbao at the same time.
The dumplings can be traced back to 1871 during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and are famous throughout China.
They have been listed as a "China Time-Honored Brand" and the preparation of the dumplings is considered an intangible cultural heritage.
During the festival, 1,000 tables will be set outdoors to tempt visitors to try the tasty dumplings.
The aroma wafting from bamboo steamers will likely be everywhere around the ancient town.
Meanwhile, now is the perfect time to visit the district, stroll through quaint old towns, or spend a day in the countryside with farmers, eating their home-cooked meals and picking ripe produce.
Nanxiang Town dates back nearly 1,500 years. It was a trading town and magnet for merchants and businessmen. It used to be called Silver Nanxiang, because of its silver coins and trade.
There will be plenty of other things to do during the event including stuffing yourself silly at the food festival, checking out some performances during the folk culture festival and watching a dumpling making contest for TV. Tanyuan Garden will open.
Also, a forum will be held in which ideas are discussed for turning Nanxiang into a central business area of Shanghai's suburbs.
