Boya brings authentic Israeli flavors to Shanghai

BOYA, a newly-opened restaurant on the first floor of 1788 Plaza on Nanjing Road W., has been churning out traditional and modern takes on Israeli fare. The restaurant is decked in rather simple decor that sets a casual tone for the Israeli food experience.

While Boya needs some improvements on the soft touches like the music and decoration, the authentic, flavorsome dishes are what keep customers coming back for more.

The fluffy pita, homemade focaccia, decadent falafel, shakshuka, hummus and kebab will make you feel like you are dining in an Israeli home.

Restaurant owner/chef Ofer Avgil, used to head the kitchen of Boya, a popular restaurant in Tel Aviv. He long wanted to live in Shanghai with his Chinese wife, so starting this new Israeli restaurant is fulfilling his dream.

While still a challenge to find authentic Israeli ingredients in the city, Avgil makes most of the ingredients and dishes in house and the final results are equally impressive.

The dishes are designed to be shared.

I started my dinner here with the classic appetizers Falafel and Hummus with warm fluffy pita breads.

Hummus has always been my favorite dip and Boya offers the best hummus I’ve tasted around town. Fresh and healthy, the spread is made from crushed chickpeas, tehini sauce, lemon, olive oil, salt and garlic and I quickly wiped clean the hummus plate with several pieces of pita bread.

The Falafel, deftly executed, were another must-have to start the meal. The classic deep-fried chickpea delicacy is as common in Israel as burgers in America.

They are usually served in pita bread. Here you can dip falafel balls in a freshly-made yoghurt dip or tahini sauce to make it the perfect snack to start the evening or eat together with pita bread.

Meat lovers should not miss the Lamb Kebab served on focaccia, with roasted eggplant and tahini sauce. The mildly smoky eggplant, with its smooth texture mixed with juicy pieces of grilled lamb meat balls was absolutely delicious.

Other crowd-pleasers include the shakshuka set, sea fish kebab, foie gras confit, according to Avgil.

Most of the dishes are tasty and fresh and servings are very generous. The quality is there and the combinations work marvellously together. Regarding the drink list, Boya serves a good selection of Israeli wines that are rarely found elsewhere.

Boya also offers excellent-value lunch sets.
