Casual, sophisticated and living the moment
MY personal style is anything except hip hop and Japanese/Korean pop styles. I try to make sure I’m happy with what I wear.
I try not to follow the fashion trends. However, when I go shopping, I learn about the new trends and buy the latest fashion items. My intuition tells me what to buy and how to mix and match. I love fashion pieces that make me excited and most importantly, suit me. Usually they are also interesting, pretty, have very good texture and special. Because of what I do, I always keep up with the latest happenings in the arts and design fields, which inspire me when I put together my outfits. I’m not interested in wearing things that are “too popular.”
I usually shop at Liberty, Selfridges, Dover Street Market, COS, Topshop in London; Colette and Le Bon Marche in Paris; and 10 Corso Como in Milan.
If I have to limit my shopping to one neighborhood in Shanghai, that would be Reel Mall on Nanjing Road W. where I’ve seen quite a few of my favorite designer brands. Also, I like to check out the Uma Wang shop on Fuxing Road W.
My favorite fashion brands are Maison Martin Margiela, Vivienne Westwood, Comme des Garcons, adidas by Stella McCartney.
I don’t have any style icon I look up too. I’d rather focus on myself, admire myself and love myself. In the new era, everyone is his/her own fashion icon.
The last item I added to my wardrobe was a pair of wool arm warmers from Maison Martin Margeila. It’s super cool, fun and sexy. I buy a lot of vases, glasses and perfumes.
My grooming staple is drinking a lot of water. On December 25, 2015, I made a big decision to change my beauty routine — I don’t want to rely on anything else but my own body. From that day on, I started to use only water to wash my face, and I’ve changed the old habit of not drinking enough water. Now I drink at least one liter of water every day. The next day, I started to feel that my skin condition was getting better. Of course, a good mood and a peaceful mind are also important to maintain great skin.
My signature perfumes are many. I like Miss Dior for its sweetness.
I don’t collect souvenirs: let bygones be bygones. I live in the moment and focus on what’s happening at the moment.
My personal style is hard to define. But I guess it’s casual, sophisticated but a bit semi-formal. I worked many years in the fashion industry so I know what I want and what works on me.
The best outfit I’ve ever worn was a small-checkered blazer and dark blue dress pants from “Tiger of Sweden,” along with a classic white shirt with cut-away collar from “Eton,” and a purple small-dotted tie from “Corneliani.”
A pair of dark brown suede Paul Smith shoes made it complete.
I follow the fashion trends online on sites such as Mr. Porter and End Clothing, and follow some profiles on Instagram. But I also like to buy hardcopy magazines like “GQ Magazine” and a Danish one called “Euroman.”
I usually shop at Akenz in the Cloud Nine mall for streetwear. It’s a multi-brand store with many cool Scandinavian brands. When I need formal wear such as suits and shirts, I shop at Suit Supply or my bespoke tailor, Mark Daswani.
If I have to limit my shopping to one neighborhood in Shanghai, it would be the former French concession area with a few shops outside the border. I love the small shops on Julu Road with backdoor samples straight from the factory.
My favorite fashion brand is an upcoming Danish brand called Apocs. They make good quality casual streetwear with some innovative details.
I look up to the Italian style icon, LapoElkann. He is an Italian entrepreneur and grandson of Gianni Agnelli, the former controlling CEO of Fiat Automobiles. He is the founder of Italia Independent, which is an Italian design company.
The last thing I added to my wardrobe is a pair of Italian jeans from “Blue de Genes,” a high quality pair of jeans with many details.
My grooming staples for haircuts and beard trims, only one barber gets it right in Shanghai — Doc Guthrie’s on Kangding Road — a cool barbershop with a great atmosphere.
The barbers know their customers like “back in the day.” Conversation flows easily with the complementary stiff whisky in your hand while you are getting touched up.
The best souvenirs I brought back home to Shanghai are my sister’s kid’s drawings.
The most memorable place I have traveled to was New Zealand. I went with my family a couple of years ago and we rented mobile homes and drove from the North Island to the South Island. I definitely want to go back and explore more of this beautiful country.
The best thing about living in Shanghai is its endless opportunities when it comes to restaurants, bars and nightlife — there is always a new place to visit.
The last book I read was “True Tales from the Road to Kathmandu,” mostly because I’m involved in a charity project called NEPAL CUP 2016.
