City’s FDA releases inspection data

As high as 97 percent of food checked in Shanghai last year met the national quality and safety standards, 0.3 percentage points higher than the previous year. Ten types of food like dairy and dairy products, egg and egg products, potato and puffed food, confectionary and nuts had a 100 percent quality rate, according to Shanghai Food and Drug Administration.

Two collective food poisoning cases were reported in the city last year, sickening a total of 65 people. Authorities say this represents an all-time low both in terms of the number of cases and individuals affected, according to a white paper released by the Shanghai FDA.

Both incidents occurred in April of 2015 and were traced to a restaurant and rural banquet. According to the FDA, diners in these cases were stricken by salmonella and staphylococcal enterotoxin respectively. Improper food handling and unsanitary conditions were also blamed.

Items with relatively low quality rate in last year’s check were mainly food served in restaurants, aquatic food and aquatic product, meat and meat product, the white paper said.

The reasons why restaurant food failed the check included that excessive levels of indicative bacteria in instant food and aluminum residue in buns and fried dough sticks, some aquatic products and meat samples were found illegal medicine. Some alcoholic beverage samples were detected with excessive lead.

The watchdog also inspected nearly 50,000 restaurants on their cleanliness and hygiene practices last year. Just under 30 percent were given the highest rating, “excellent,” according to the local FDA’s three-tiered rating system. Meanwhile, 66.7 percent were given a grade of “pass,” the next highest level. Just 3.6 percent received a “fail” grade, down from 6.5 percent a year earlier.

Customers can see these ratings for themselves on plaques displayed at the entrances of local restaurants. An “excellent” rating is signified by a green smiling face logo, while “pass” ratings are represented by a yellow expressionless face. Restaurants rated as “fail” are given a red frowning face.
