Crazy Ones serves delicious paellas that will drive your taste buds loco

FEW Spanish dishes are as popular as paella. Here in Shanghai, one of the best new places to sample this sizzling Iberian staple is Crazy Ones in Xujiahui.

Despite its name, Crazy Ones features a calming cathedral-inspired décor, with plenty of warm colors and private dining areas. Outdoor seating is available on a limited basis, as are private dining areas for larger groups.

While the paella is definitely one of the restaurant’s biggest draws, the menu features a full range of food and drinks. Among the appetizers, I ordered the garlic king prawns (45 yuan/US$6.82). These jumbo-size crustaceans were served in a sweet soy sauce base that didn’t overpower their original flavor. Liberal use of garlic cloves also helped banish any lingering sea-saltiness.

The Spanish omelette (32 yuan) was unexpectedly tasty. It came with small-diced potatoes that paired nicely with the soft, creamy egg.

As for the paella, there are seven kinds to choose from. These include paella with steak and pesto, saffron paella, paella with cuttlefish rolls, paella with cheese, and chicken paella with truffle and mushroom.

The saffron paella is a popular choice (88 yuan for a small plate, 166 yuan for a large). The rice is well coated with tomato sauce, flavorful, tender and deliciously crispy. If you’re a seafood lover, you’ll also be impressed by the firm prawns, tender squid and soft mussels.

This dish, like the other paellas at Crazy Ones, comes in two sizes. Prices range from 68 to 98 yuan for a small serving; while large portions run from 132 yuan to 188 yuan.

Curry seafood spaghetti (62 yuan) is a good choice for weekday lunches. The thick curry paste coats the noodles well and makes an excellent dipping sauce for the garlic bread served on the side. The prawns in the dish are plentiful, although somewhat smaller than those used in the appetizer.

The restaurant also has a bar, located to the right of the main entrance. In addition to the normal range of cocktails and beers, there are also soft drinks and flavored milk shakes. If you’re feeling adventurous, check out the peanut milk shake (38 yuan).

For dessert, the restaurant offers rice pudding and cream cheese dessert cups, both of which are deliciously refreshing and priced at 38 yuan.

Crazy Ones is currently offering a range of online promotions and deals, including cash coupons and special set meals. Offers valid through September.
