'Crunk' mixes rock, punk and hip hop culture

FOR the first time partygoers in Shanghai will have the option to get "crunk" when American hip hop personality Lil Jon performs this Saturday night at nightclub Cuvve (4/F, Bund 18, Zhongshan Road E1.)

After years of performing in the southern United States, Lil Jon began receiving worldwide attention in 2002 with a subgenre of hip hop music he calls crunk, combining the intensity of rock and roll punk music with hip hop club culture.

The bass heavy music moved quickly from nightclubs to radio and TV, helping draw attention to hip hop music away from New York and Los Angeles and to cities in the American South, such as Houston and Atlanta.

Hit singles he has produced and added his distinct, hoarse vocals to include "Get Low" featuring the Ying Yang Twins and "Yeah" performed with Usher and Ludacris.

"Yeah" was a worldwide phenomenon. It reached No.1 in 15 countries and won him a 2005 Grammy award in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category.

His flamboyant appearance and simple, shouted lyrics were parodied to much acclaim and popularity on the popular American comedy TV series "Chapelle's Show" beginning in 2004. In the sketches, Lil Jon, played by Dave Chapelle, would initially only communicate in distinct Lil Jon exclamations "Yeah!" "Okay!" and "What!"

In recent years Lil Jon has been less prominent but as recently as 2009 produced two international hits with "Shots" by LMFAO featuring Lil Jon and "I Know You Want Me" by Miami rapper Pitbull.

It's expected Lil Jon will perform those high energy hits and more for his Shanghai appearance this Saturday.
