DJ Bok Bok to stage spectacular visual show
ENGLISH DJ and music producer Bok Bok emphasizes strong visuals that provide context for his distinctive electronic dance music.
And his canvas and dance floor in Shanghai will be the Shelter on Yongfu Road on May 24 when he plays hyper-real tracks from his new second solo EP.
His taste maker label Night Slugs is at the forefront of the latest renaissance in UK electronic music. Spin Magazine says “it has developed one of the most distinctive sounds in UK dance music, a mutable hybrid of grime, house, electro, R&B, techno, hip-hop and dubstep.”
“I’m looking forward to learning more about the China underground DJ scene when I come,” says Bok Bok, who will also perform in Beijing before coming to Shanghai.
The Shanghai event will also feature local DJ Sleepless, Damacha, Faded Ghost b2b Howell and Misloop. It’s organized by Wooozy.cn, an online publication that aims to introduce the freshest music from China and around the world.
Bok Bok (Alex Sushon in real life), 29, started DJing in 2004, began Night Slugs in 2008 and the Night Slugs label in 2010.
Originally from Ukraine, he has been living in London for more than 20 years. “DJing is pretty unrestrictive and free,” he says, adding that he occasionally does live sets, as with Kelela.
Much of his work is inspired by Azonto, a dance and music genre originating from the coast of Ghana.
“The drum tracks are so sick (cool),” he says, “similar to the South African house sound.”
His own production lately has been drawing on the classic electronic era of funk, the 1990s work of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
Bok Bok, who grew up surrounded by modernism in Ukraine, is interested in architecture and takes a camera everywhere.
“The most unexpected of places or buildings can have a moving affect on me, so it’s definitely possible that architecture in Shanghai will do the same,” says the DJ.
He says London’s music scene on the whole or its underground dance scene that he belongs to have really a unified style, especially in terms of visual aesthetics.
“It’s kind of a mish-mash visually, often a bit underdeveloped, whimsical, or an afterthought,” he says.
