Dazed and fused

Haiku by Hatsune describes itself as “Japanese-Californian fusion at its best”. It seeks to serve an authentic taste of, ahem, traditionally non-traditional Californian sushi.

While Haiku’s menu includes a representative range of Japanese dishes — from tempura to teppanyaki — its array of sushi rolls is definitely the highlight.

Splendidly named options include Princess Li roll (deep-fried shrimp, avocado, snow crab, and cucumber rolled in large tempura flakes), Moto-Roll-Ah (deep-fried spicy tuna, snow crab and avocado wrapped in roll topped with flying fish roe and spring onion) and salmon with avocado hand roll.

For those seeking a fancy flavor, we recommend the foie gras roll (seared foie gras, tempura shrimp, and avocado topped with unagi and sweet sauce).

All rolls can be shared with a group, but each roll also serves as a filling meal for one. The restaurant is generous with its sauces, garnishing plates with dashes of each roll’s paired sauce.
