Exhibition of rare seahorses makes for hypnotic viewing

Seahorses are incredibly beautiful yet delicate creatures. Changfeng Ocean World is now hosting an exhibition of rare seahorse species and weedy sea dragon.
A dozen valuable seahorses are featured in the exhibition including the tiger tail seahorse and lined seahorse.
Different from other sea creatures, male seahorses have a front pouch to carry the fertilized eggs deposited by the female. After several weeks, the eggs will develop into small seahorses. Once they are born, neither mother or father will provide any further care.
Male seahorses often look to mate within hours of giving birth to a batch of babies. In most seahorse species, 100 to 1,000 offspring are born in each batch.
Seahorses are poor and slow swimmers. Scientists have said the slowest-moving fish in the world is the dwarf seahorse, which has a top speed of about 1.5 meters per hour.
While seahorses change color, much like a chameleon, to blend in with their surroundings, the lack of mobility puts them in danger.
They can be easily caught by humans. They also have many predators like various fish, crabs, stingrays and even penguins. Some scientists say seahorses face extinction within 10 years.
Simon Zhang, an official from Changfeng Ocean World, says the exhibition is to raise public awareness about marine life protection.
“Oceans cover about 70 percent of the earth’s surface and they are where life began,” he says. “Protection of the ocean and sea creatures is very urgent and important.”
