Fashion mavens share secrets of outstanding style

GIULIA Venturi is a Rome-based bag designer with her own label: Supermarket Bag. She has a passion for Italian hand-made goods.

My personal style represents a versatile sense of fashion. I like mixed styles, and love the contrast of a woman who has a male style with feminine elegance. I love pence trousers and jackets, but worn with very high heels. I love an extremely womanly style which hides a garcon’s soul.

For any special occasion, the choice of shoes is what I rely on. The shoes should have a very high heel. For the rest, I love a unique and linear style.

I follow fashion trends during my fashion research. I chase different photographers and alternative editorials in, for example, “Close Up,” “Dazed,” “Purple” and “Another.” In addition, I discover new seasonal trends by going to fairs like “Premiere Vision” in Paris.

I fancy going to the Dover Street Market, Luisa Via Roma & Colette and other famous shops. Some sophisticated boutiques that I really love are L’Eclaireur in Paris for alternative clothes, Degli Effetti in Rome for evening dresses, Le Noir in Treviso. For my shoes, I love Quadra in Trani.

My favorite fashion brands are Vionnet for dresses, Azzedine Alaia and Gucci for purses and Balenciaga for shoes.

The designer I most admire is Giambattista Valli; perfect mix between elegance and creativity.

My style icon is Maria Grazia Chiuri because of her unique style and innovative and creative designs. In addition, I am inspired by northern European fashion lines like Margiela and Acne Studio. The Black Ankle Boot by Margiela is an icon and will never be out of style! I also love Isabella Rossellini as a symbol of fashion and elegance. I really love the looks of Marion Cotillard and Karmen Pedaru.

The last item I added to my wardrobe was a pair of Coliac shoes with barbell piercing pearls.

The fashion item I’m eyeing next is a pair of jeans with “filles a papa” embroidery.

I collect unique rings and pendants that catch my eye. I take these treasures and weave them into a large lace fabric to keep as my good luck charm.

My grooming staples are my favorite shampoo Nirvana by Elizabeth and James. The best aging serum is Skin Ceuticals; body lotion is Dyptique l’ombre dans l’Eau.

My signature scent is Nasomatto’s Black Afgano.

The best souvenir I’ve found abroad is an Indian Sari which I bought in New Delhi at the JanPath Market.

Guy Heywood is chief operating officer of Two Roads Hospitality Asia. He has a wealth of operational experience along with an innate knowledge in luxury services. He also has a sophisticated personal style.

My personal style is casual chic — tailored, fitted pants and patterned light shirts, as I live in the tropics. I like mixing jackets with pants sometimes instead of a suit, but definitely no ties and no socks. I prefer Italian brands like Boggi and Boglioli and Tod’s, but also have success with J Crew; that Ludlow suit they do in summer-weight cotton is perfect for the heat of Singapore.

The best outfit I’ve ever worn for a special occasion was a sarong! With a white linen shirt, it’s a great look. But recently I presented a lifetime achievement award to Adrian Zecha, my old boss at Aman Resorts, and I opted for J Crew: light-blue linen pants, a crisp white shirt, navy jacket and pocket square with navy Ferragamo loafers.

As a hotelier who stays in some of the best hotels around the world, it is not difficult to see what trends are in, but surprisingly, with the world travelling more these days and new markets opening up, trends are still different from region to region. I think you cannot go wrong with seeing what is happening in Italy. The Italians are so stylish, even if they are not trendy per se all the time.

I usually shop when I am on holiday or when I go away on business. I am not a big shopper at home, as I like the whole experience of getting around, seeing new sites and new styles when travelling and buying something that will remind me of that special moment. Lately, London and Italy tend to be the places I shop.

My favorite fashion brand is without a doubt Tod’s for shoes; I have at least 20 pairs.

The designers I most admire are behind Brunello Cucinelli and Hermes; the quality of the production and the materials is amazing. I like the way Cucinelli in particular puts his money where his mouth is; I read somewhere that he pays his staff higher than the average wage and sponsors apprenticeships for young artisans. And his clothes are perfectly cut, casual-chic.

My style icons are some actors from the early 60s that looked pretty great. Steve McQueen is one.

The last items I added to my wardrobe are two more pairs of Tod’s suede driving shoes — one mustard-yellow and one blue — and a great pair of Vilebrequin tuxedo-cut swim trunks in ice-blue with a nice navy and white pattern of little fishes. The fit on those is fantastic; very tailored, but they are also very comfortable.

The fashion item I’m eyeing next is a new Boggi jacket. I got a navy travel jacket there recently, unstructured and great for the plane. I might get another one in a different color.

My grooming staples include twice a day shower (Singapore is so hot), face cleanser and moisturizer by Clinique or Neals Yard, beard trim and quick aftershave spray before walking out the door with wet hair.

My signature perfume is Carthusia Uomo from Capri, or a black pepper cologne made by an old organic apothecary in Italy called Erbario Toscano.

The best souvenir I brought home is hard to pick because I do love to buy something new and unique from most places I visit, whether that is a cashmere shawl from Jodhpur (they are great for long-haul flights), a perfect linen shirt from Positano or a locally hand crafted bar of soap.
