Four Points to being a good leader

A positive mindset and creative thinking are essential for anyone, male or female, aspiring to be a leader. And once you’ve got business acumen, honesty and integrity, you can become a good one.

This is the philosophy that has guided Yvonne Wan to progress from restaurant waitress to hotel manager at the St. Regis Bali and then to the No. 1 spot at Four Points by Sheraton Shanghai, Daning.

In July 2012, Yvonne took over the top job at the 315-room hotel in the bustling complex, Life Hub @ Daning in Zhabei District.

“Being a leader is not that difficult, however, being a good one is something that any leader needs to remind oneself of every day,” says the general manager.

“There is a certain set of leadership skills that are best learned by practice, trial and error, and by getting honest and constructive feedback. And an essential way of measuring successful leadership is the result of our efforts in supporting others to develop and grow.”

Yvonne has more than a decade with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, which she joined as director of business development at the Sheraton Perdana Langkawi in Malaysia.

Yvonne is a strong believer in staff training as one of the keys to making a successful hotel.

“Staff at Four Points endeavor to impress their guests by listening to what they are saying and what’s more, by acting upon them,” says the general manager. She cites the effectiveness of the GPS — Global Personalization at Starwood. “We have five work streams: guest, digital, customer, revenue management and property. This program let us be the first to personalize the guest experience on a global scale.”

Four Points and Starwood are very focused on creating great experiences for its guests and connecting with family, friends and business.

The Starwood group operates more than 1,200 hotels in nearly 100 countries where travelers can find a great stay with classic style, genuine service and timeless comfort.

Four Points by Sheraton inDaning opened in early 2007 and has just completed a major renovation project that began last year and covered mainly guest rooms, banquet and meeting spaces.

The 315 guest rooms, with clean lines and warm contemporary furnishings, are designed for maximum comfort with cozy and fluffy Four Points by Sheraton Four Comfort Bed being a particular highlight. In addition, the hotel’s 1,735 square meters of banquet and meeting space include a 600-square-meter grand ballroom and eight state-of-the-art function rooms catering for different business needs.

All have had a face-lift. They stand out as great options for any occasion for groups as large as 300 people.

The hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, The Eatery, is a stylish and functional retreat on the lobby level. Launched just few weeks ago, it provides a-la-carte and a daily buffet spread of international flavors and local favorites in a setting with a warm and soothing ambience in warm textures of fabrics and wood.

With 12 years under the Starwood flag, Yvonne has a passion for her work and has found ways to refresh and pamper herself in the physically demanding job.

During leisure time, she loves the outdoors, frequents spas and practices yoga which helps her maintain balance between work, health and delicious Shanghainese food.
