Go Dutch around Shanghai

JING'AN Park will be transformed into a "little Holland" on Sunday and Monday. Everyone is welcome to drop by and get a little taste of the Netherlands.

Dutch businesses will present many high-quality products and services, and visitors can meet Dutch people, taste the country's food and listen to music created by musicians around Holland.

"Chinese people who are interested in Dutch culture and customs are invited to the two-day event in Jing'an Park," says Peter Potman, consul general of the Netherlands in Shanghai. "Get a 'Dutch Days in Jing'an Park Passport' at the event venue and start your mini trip to Holland. We hope that all the visitors will enjoy themselves in this sea of joy."

The Jing'an Park event is part of Dutch Days 2013, which was initiated by the Dutch consulate to showcase the best of what the country has to offer.

Shanghai-born Kristine Tsai lived in Amsterdam for 10 years as a tour guide. Interested in design and arts, Tsai is happy that many design activities will be included in the Dutch Days events.

"The Netherlands has made a lot of contributions to modern design and arts which deserve to be studied by us," Tsai says. "I am excited about heading to Jing'an Park for the Dutch food fair, baby fair and flower workshop. I think it will be a lot of fun."

Queen's Day is celebrated annually in the Netherlands at the end of April to honor Queen Beatrix. Shanghai's Dutch community will also celebrate Queen's Day tonight with a reception at Regal International East Asia Hotel.

Non-profit event

The series of events for Dutch Days 2013 kicked off on April 11 with the Green Drinks Event Forum. Dutch independent conservationist and writer Meindert Brouwer spoke about the books "The Ecosystem Promise" and "China's Socio-Economic Transformation" at River South Art Center.

"Some heavyweight scholars, artists and designers have been invited from the Netherlands to give lectures and workshops on arts and culture during the Dutch Days," Consul General Potman notes.

The River South Art Center also is displaying through June 10 sculptures by Dutch artist Ronald A. Westerhuis, who specializes in the application of stainless steel. After working 10 years in the offshore industry as a welder and later as a supervisor, his fascination with large pieces of stainless steel made Westerhuis want to create art.

To pay tribute to Queen Beatrix, King Willem-Alexander and the Dutch Royal family, the local Dutch Association will host "Kroningsfeest Shanghai" on Tuesday.

"It is a non-profit event and any surplus revenue will be gifted to Shanghai Children's Medical Center," says Machiel Visser from the association, a non-profit organization that connects Dutch-speaking people who live, study and work in and around Shanghai.

The association has some 300 members out of an estimated 3,000 Dutch people in the area. It was founded 20 years ago by six Dutch expats here and over the years has become a "Dutch home" in Shanghai by hosting leisure, family, cultural but mostly social events.

"The event does not only aim to acknowledge the Orange Succession and congratulate the Dutch Royal Family on the many domestic and international achievements, but also to showcase Dutch culture in Shanghai," says Potman.
