Great Lobster can’t quite live up to lofty name
IF you’re looking for a quick, budget friendly seafood fix near Jing’an Temple, The Great Lobster is worth checking out.
Opened just this fall, the restaurant’s Tongren Road location is easily accessible and more relaxed than many eateries in the mall across the street. It’s a smallish space with a high ceiling and about a dozen tables with leather chairs and sofa seating.
The menu is very concise and includes signature Boston lobster dishes, a few pastas, steak, pork chops and light salads.
The whole lobster roll set meal (128 yuan, US$18.6) comes with French fries, sweet corn and salad greens or corn soup, depending on availability. The Boston lobster, which was boiled rather than grilled, was quite chewy and sweet.
The seasoning was light and you can add salt or pepper to taste. One can certainly find better lobster in town, but be prepared to pay much more for it.
The mayonnaise for the lobster roll is served on the side, a definite plus as one can decide how much to add. The toasted soft roll and French fries were nice, too.
The mini lobster roll set menu is 48 yuan, and the shrimp roll is 58 yuan. Set menus don’t include beverages, but lemon water is provided for free.
Though lobster can also be ordered with spaghetti (98 yuan), the pasta here is not quite up to standard.
If you are not a fan of lobster rolls and wish to enjoy just the seafood, a whole grilled lobster that weighs between 550 and 600 grams is now 198 yuan with sides.
For meat lovers, the Spanish Iberia pork chop is 88 yuan and comes with sides of fries and salad as well. The grilled steaks are served in small pieces in aluminum foil bags.
All lobster and meat set meals are served fast-food style in convenient rectangular boxes. Disposable gloves are available on each table to keep your hands clean.
The service was okay but the staff seemed shorthanded. The beverage list only has cold drinks now and no coffees or teas.
