Great shops for coffee drinkers on the go

Located at 205 Nanyang Road, a backstreet off crowded Nanjing Road W., Manner Coffee may have only opened on October 8 but it’s already gained a following thanks to its quality drinks.

What this tiny grab-and-go shop lacks in size, it makes up for in terms of single-origin coffee selection, with beans from west China’s Yunnan Province, Panama, Columbia, Sumatra (Mandheling), Brazil, Yirgacheffe, Kenya and Nicaragua.

Even more surprising though are the prices. The espresso and Americano are priced at 10 yuan (US$1.52) for 8oz (240 ml) and 15 yuan for 12oz (360 ml) respectively. Regular coffee is 15 yuan for an 8oz serving, while the Mocha and Hot Chocolate start at 20 yuan and 25 yuan respectively. Syrup and an extra espresso shot are available free of charge.

Customers who bring their own reusable cup can enjoy a 5 yuan discount on each drink. Additionally, those who purchase Manner’s single-origin coffee beans can get 18 yuan off their next purchase if they return the reusable glass container.

“I think coffee should be a common daily drink just like soda or soy milk. Many Chinese people don’t like coffee partly because of the quality of coffee and the high prices,” explained founder Han Yulong.

Han makes sure to use only high-quality coffee beans and milk. Currently, the coffee shop uses fresh Asahi Pure Milk to enhance the texture of the drinks with milk. For maximum freshness, Han also roasts coffee beans every week.

According to Han, Manner’s best-selling espresso-based drinks are the latte and flat white. The silky smooth flat white with a double-shot espresso/ristretto has a pleasantly strong, full-bodied flavor with a sweet butty aftertaste. The house espresso blend contains a mix of single-origin beans — Yirgacheffe G1, Brazil, Mandheling, and Columbia.

Each single-origin coffee is hand dripped upon order, no matter how busy the shop gets. But if you don’t want to wait in a long queue, you should avoid peak hours during lunch time and the morning commute rush.

Although it’s tiny, Manner Coffee still has an L-shaped wooden bench where customers can sit down to enjoy their drinks.

If you’re feeling brave, ask for a shot of grapefruit syrup for your coffee — it’s an off-menu item!

BuzzTime Coffee (formerly known as D’espresso) is a small but popular coffee chain with branches around Shanghai, including on the Wujiang Road pedestrian street. What many first notice about this branch are the collection of antique coffee makers in its front window. Unfortunately, these are not for sale.

Buzztime’s creamy latte is a popular choice with customers.

The cafe offers a range of espresso-based and single-origin drinks. Hand-drip coffee is available at certain Buzztime locations, although not at the Wujiang Road branch.

As for prices, a regular size (360ml) latte costs 20 yuan, while a large (500 ml) is 23 yuan. Single-origin coffee is priced at 25 yuan for a regular size.

Skimmed milk and low-caffeine beans are available on request. Packaged beans are available for purchase with free grinding provided. With Buzztime’s point card, repeat visitors can get one free espresso-based of single-origin coffee after the purchase of five drinks.

1454’s Café is a takeaway coffee shop on Nanjing Road W. which offers a wide range of drinks.

The cafe’s signature drink, Vietnamese coffee, comes with or without condensed milk. Another popular item is the sea salt coffee, which uses Mocha coffee beans from Yemen.

The drink features a top layer of salty cream that contrasts with the coffee below.

Most coffees are priced at 15 yuan for a medium size (about 400ml) or 18 yuan for a large size (about 500ml).

For those who want something a little stronger, the 1454’S also offers a range of alcohol-added drinks using Baileys or brandy.

Packaged beans are also available, as are homemade doughnuts for only 6 yuan each.
