Health care focus shifts to prevention
china’s health care focus has been shifted from disease treatment to disease prevention under a new round of health reforms that include the establishment of a new National Health Commission.
Health care reform, especially in public hospitals, the issue of an aging population and tobacco control are the new commission’s top priorities.
Life expectancy in China is rising and general public health has been improving due to a range of factors.
These include disease control and prevention, better medical services, childbirth care and traditional Chinese medicine, the commission said.
The government has made great efforts to encourage people to seek medical treatment and guidance at the grassroots clinic level and improve their health knowledge.
It has also focused on early intervention and disease detection.
Ge Feng, CEO of Jiahui Health, said providing health care services should not only be about caring for the sick, but also providing services and guidance that promote ongoing health and wellness.
Jiahui Health opened a Jiahui Wellness Center last month to offer rehabilitation as well as psychological and lifestyle help.
“At Jiahui Wellness Center, people can receive individualized courses on sports and nutrition and psychological courses for disease prevention,” Ge said.
Wu Jinglei, the director of the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission, said the city will adopt a health standard higher than the national standards.
And authorities will further focus on boosting the health industry and encouraging social investment in health, Wu said.
The Hongqiao International Medical Park and the Pudong International Medical Park will become the major locations of leading international hospitals and joint venture facilities as well as branches of leading public hospitals to serve local residents and people from neighboring provinces and countries.
