High-end hotels boast bevy of brunch choices

WEEKEND brunch is an institution in Shanghai. Nowadays, there are plenty of brunch choices to suit just about any taste or preference. Whether you’re hankering for a hearty buffet of Western breakfast standards, or a sizzling steak paired with succulent seafood, you can find what you’re looking here in Shanghai. Many of the best spreads can be found at the city’s up-scale hotels. Here are 10 locations to consider the next time you’re planning a brunch date.

Shanghai Marriott Hotel City Centre

The Shanghai City Bistro — located in the Shanghai Marriott Hotel City Centre — offers a special brunch buffet that includes tempura from Inagiku, the hotel’s Japanese restaurant.

The brunch also includes a large selection of seafood, including fresh shucked oysters flown in from France. These oysters are prepared by the restaurant’s chef right at guests’ tables.

The Shanghai City Bistro offers several dining ambience choices. Whether you prefer the energy of the open kitchens and long communal tables or a more intimate space overlooking the bustling city streets, the restaurant can accommodate you.

Two semi-private dining tables with seats for up to 10 people are also available.

Price: 368 yuan (US$60) per person. Children under the age of 6 eat for free and those under 12 will get half price. Plus 15 percent service charge.

Kerry Hotel Pudong

The MEAT at Kerry Hotel Pudong introduced a new semi-buffet weekend brunch. Diners can partake of an appetizer and dessert buffet and also select main courses from the a la carte menu.

Mains include Wagyu sirloin, hazelnut-crusted rack of lamb, lemon butter king prawn and the triple-decker beef burger. There is also The MEAT Big Breakfast, with beef steak, pork sausage, fried egg on toast and tomato.

The brunch comes with free flow craft beer, soft drinks, coffee and tea.

“We select only the freshest and finest ingredients to create a wide selection of brunch semi-buffet menu options,” said Otto Goh, the hotel’s executive chef. “Diners will be pampered by our contemporary environment and vibrant, spirited staff.”

The MEAT weekend brunch runs from 11:30am to 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Its contemporary steakhouse and grill prepare high quality Australian Angus beef. A must-try is the Ningaloo Tomahawk, a 1.8 kilogram hunk of prime rib that serves four people and is carved right in front of diners by the chef.

Price: 350 yuan (US$56.5) per adult, 128 yuan per child between 4 and 12. One child is subject to one adult, 228 yuan per additional child. Plus 15 percent service charge. Free access for kids to Adventure Zone between 12pm and 3pm.

Sofitel Shanghai Hyland

With its casual modern design and privileged view of Nanjing Road, Mosaic restaurant in Sofitel Shanghai Hyland offers a brunch buffet as well as an innovative menu focused on organic culinary creations.

One highlight of this season’s Sunday brunch is the Alaska king crab. There are various ways to savor this delicacy, including menu choices like king crab leg with lemon mayonnaise or spicy teppanyaki.

Sunday brunch at Mosaic also includes foie gras, seafood and a selection of French cheeses and pastries.

The Sunday brunch runs from noon to 3 pm in August and September.

Four Seasons Hotel, Pudong

The Camelia at Four Seasons Hotel, Pudong is debuting a new cocktail bar and authentic pizza oven this August.

The restaurant is now serving Italian favorites such as antipasti, hand-made pasta, rotisserie meats and decadent desserts.

Camelia’s Italian Sunday brunch features Italian classics such as Foccacia Mascarpone, pizzas and pastas. It also includes an antipasto bar and dessert counter.

Price: 428 yuan (US$69) per person. Free flow Brut Prosecco is available for 588 yuan per person. Plus 15 percent service charge.

The Langham, Xintiandi, Shanghai

Cachet Restaurant at The Langham, Xintiandi, Shanghai offers a premium Sunday brunch with free flow Bollinger Champagne. A rich selection of food includes oysters, baby lobsters, Alaska king crab legs, roasted suckling pig, Wellington beef and more. The Jamon Iberico de Bellota from Spain is made with 100 percent Iberian acorn-fed pigs raised in an oak forest in Seville.

The new Sunday brunch at the Renaissance in Pudong not only features a buffet of grill, seafood and dessert options. It also includes a playground and a candy buffet for youngsters. Children can decorate their own cookies while their parents enjoy a relaxed weekend brunch in style.

Hyatt on the Bund

The Sunday Champagne Brunch at VUE features eight cooking stations set up throughout the restaurant. Appetizers and desserts are served buffet-style, while chefs offer tableside service on a selection of seafood, including fresh shucked oysters and Boston lobsters.

An a la carte menu features signature dishes like lobster bisque, steak tartar and flambéed tiger prawns with peppers and zucchini.

The brunch also includes free flow Perrier Jouet champagne.

Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund

The champagne Sunday brunch at the Waldorf Astoria unites two of the Bund’s most luxurious venues for the ultimate Sunday brunch experience.

The brunch begins at 11am at the Long Bar. Guests can congregate in this much-loved heritage venue to enjoy freshly shucked oysters from a marble oyster bar. Then it continues to the Grand Brasserie at noon. In this opulent modern Manhattan-style setting, diners will enjoy a sumptuous array of dishes by Waldorf’s master chef.

There is also a seafood bar with caviar, clams and premium shellfish. Guests can choose three dishes from the a la carte Chef’s Specialities menu.

A jazz trio performs live during the brunch.

The summer Sunday brunch at Grand Millennium Shanghai HongQiao’s O Cafe offers a deal for families: 428 yuan (US$69) for two adults and one child under 1.3 meters in height.

This deal includes free flow sparkling wine, house wine, beer, juice or soft drinks. The Moet & Chandon Champagne is also specially priced at 300 yuan per bottle.
