Hotel Indigo blends historic, new at Bund

PEOPLE often get mixed feelings when they are overlooking the Bund. Is this place modern or nostalgic? It is both, simultaneously.

The massive historical onstructions on the Bund rush you back to the 1930s, but when facing the Huangpu River, the skyline and the modernized shore of Pudong can overwhelm you with a futuristic cityscape.

Surprisingly, there you are, standing inside Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund, physically isolated from this view while still immersed in such surroundings. Each of Hotel Indigo’s constructions is uniquely designed to emerge into and reflect regional culture.

Hotel Indigo is an upscale boutique brand, the first of five that the world's largest hotel group IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) has introduced to the Asia Pacific. This brand established a new concept that targets upscale travelers who seek a more individual and authentic experience that incorporates historical, cultural and natural elements as reflected by the local neighborhood.

“The energy and flow of this diverse and dynamic neighborhood called for a decidedly youthful design, giving travelers a clear alternative between staid and restrained elegance and a fresh and playful stylishness,” says Andrew Moore, lead designer of HBA, who designed the Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund.

The style is most eminent in the hotel’s stunning suites, where guests will time travel on the Bund. The Deco Suite steps back in time for guests to appreciate the old Shanghai, offering an experience to reminisce; the Glamour Suite is decorated as the modern Shanghai, which immerses the guests in a luxurious place for entertainment and stay; the Future Suite looks out to the financial center of Pudong with its nighttime neon. With futuristic elements of furnishing and designs, guests may find inspirations for their own future.

Apart from the obvious features of each suite, Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund also provides multiple services ranging from exclusive banquets to airport transportation for guests in their high-end suites.

To utilize the advantage of the hotel’s surrounding area to the fullest, a considerable number of elements are borrowed to design ornaments in the hotel. Four local themes in particular are representative in the interior design — the Huangpu River, Pier 16 (Shiliupu), the historic Bund and the Yuyuan Garden.

Nautical elements in the hotel’s reception areas evoke the theme of Pier 16: custom-designed silk print wallpapers, selections of Chinese lanterns and ceramic vases, as well as the canopy bed, originally inspired by traditional Chinese wedding beds.

The guestrooms are decorated with features related to the Bund’s history. Guest bathrooms are in a minimalist and contemporary style, not only mirroring the dramatic skyline but also overlooking the magnificent Huangpu River.

In an effort to enhance the representation of contemporary Shanghai, the design team worked with local artists to create sculptures, paintings and photography for display within the hotel. Moreover, in keeping with Hotel Indigo brand’s commitment to a natural, recyclable and ecologically friendly design, Hotel Indigo recycles urban materials such as brick, iron, wood and stone for construction as well as furniture, assuring commitment and sustainability.
