Illegal invasive cosmetic surgery risk

Some beauty parlors or unlicensed clinics have been found performing invasive cosmetic service, which is illegal and risky to customers, the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration said.

Beauty parlors are only allowed to carry out cosmetology services that are noninvasive, which means no cutting of the skin and no bleeding.

Staff can use techniques and equipment as well as cosmetics and skin care products to clean, care and improve the skin. Such services include skin massage, hair dressing, foot massage and spa.

Only licensed clinics and hospitals are allowed to conduct medical cosmetology, which means medical professionals use medicine, surgery, medical equipment or other invasive or irreversible medical technology and methods to repair and reshape parts of the body and face.

The two concepts of life cosmetology and medical cosmetology are completely different.

It is important to visit licensed medical facilities for plastic surgery and any other invasive therapy.

It is dangerous to visit unlicensed facilities or purchase injections online, Shanghai FDA said.

Dr Du Yuanyuan from Shanghai Mylike Plastic Hospital said she has received many cases where young women have had their eyes ruined after double eyelid surgery at beauty parlors or unlicensed facilities.

“I receive dozens of such requests a year,” she said.

“Some patients were unable to close their eyes or have one big and one small eye after so-called doctors at such venues just simply cut the eyelid or removed muscles and fat on the eyelid.

“Plastic surgery is to make a person more beautiful and healthy, but illegal and improper methods can’t achieve such results.

“On the contrary, they can be risky and even fatal,” she added. “A professional plastic surgeon will carefully check each patient’s condition and make a suggestion in line with his or her own condition.”
