It’s winter, take care of your heart

WINTER is the time for many elderly Chinese to have TCM reinforcement therapy to build energy and boost immunity. Some choose to have gaofang, usually a paste made with pearl powder, shell of turtle and various herbs; some go to hospitals for transfusions.

Yet cardiovascular experts warn the infusion procedure may increase the risks.

A 73-year-old man with hypertension and a history of cerebral infarction went to Shanghai Yodak Cardio-Thoracic Hospital for danshen (the root of the red-rooted salvia) injection as his neighbors advised him that patients like him should go to the hospital to dredge the blood vessels of the whole body.

Many local hospitals say winter is the peak season when many elderly people come to request to “hang brine.”

Yet cardio-cerebrovascular disease is complicated. And there is no short-term solution. It also needs long-term prevention, doctors warn.

Doctor Sun Baogui from Shanghai Yodak Cardio-Thoracic Hospital says opening blocked veins works with some patients who have had acute strokes or heart infractions.

The blockage can be resolved with drugs, repairing tissue suffering a lack of blood. The entire process has nothing to do with the transfusion of blood stasis.

The process of treating cardio-cerebrovascular disease is very long, usually because of chronic issues such as high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia.

Arterial plaque can clog blood vessels for years of decades. This condition will not be improved by an annual infusion.

Even though the infusion has an expansive effect on the local blood vessels, a few days after the infusion, the drugs will be metabolized and will not have a long-term “repair” effect on the damaged blood vessels.

In addition, blood-activating drugs can increase bleeding risk in patients with bleeding tendencies.

Due to the composition problem or purification process and other reasons, a few people may appear allergic or have serious risk of liver injury, head swelling and other conditions.

Expert tips to prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease effectively include treating basic symptoms, such as blood pressure, blood sugar and blood lipids.

Make sure your diet is balanced. Execrise regularly and visit the hospital regularly.
