Keeping style simple and very classy

Fabio Mazzeo is the chairman and design director of Exclusiva Design, an Italian leading company in architectural and luxury interior design. Based in Rome, he travels around the world to follow various projects, including the division in Shanghai. Often dressed in tailored suits with refined fabrics, he sports an elegant and practical style for his weekly journeys abroad.

My personal style features the non-color in the leading role, as Coco Chanel always used to say: “People think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. Its beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.” I love tailored suits with refined fabrics and I often match them with plain charcoal grey or black T-shirts. In this way, I feel comfortable in any occurrence of my job, from reviewing projects with my team of designers to meeting with clients.

The best outfit I’ve ever worn is a classic tuxedo, with waistcoat and black leather oxford balmorals, for a design awards ceremony. I did feel great that night.

I try not to follow fashion trends, but I rely on timeless items. Creativity and inventiveness are conveyed in my job, I like sharp and well-defined outfits.

I usually shop in Rome. I have the privilege to work in the center of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Rome. Walking around our headquarters I may encounter excellent shops, from major luxury brands to historical tailor shops.

My favorite fashion brand is Brioni. I identify with its sense of style and its Italian character.

The designer I most admire is Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, who embodied the glamour of the French Art Deco style of the 1920s. I think the major legacy he left is understanding and witnessing that elegance may be able to survive time.

My style icon is Adriano Olivetti, the Italian manufacturer of Olivetti typewriters, an entrepreneur and innovator who changed shops into modern factories. He reinvested profit for the benefit of the society. I look up to him as an Italian icon.

The latest item I added to my wardrobe is a grey scarf made of exquisite silk that I was given by an important Chinese client.

I collect works from Luca De Felice. I closely follow this Italian artist’s work, who makes drawings and artworks employing any kind of materials. An unusual energy flows from his pieces.

My grooming style is being neat and clean, which makes part of expressing a lifestyle. A good haircut and circle beard complete the look.

My signature perfume is Man Extreme by Bulgari.

The last book I’ve read is “Open,” Andre Agassi’s biography written by the Pulitzer prize winner J. R. Moehringer. It tells how even forced choices can become a chance for payback, reminding of the importance of determination in any field.

Shanghai-born jewelry designer Tong Wenwei creates fine jewelry inspired by old-time beauty and old-school techniques. The cheerful designer is always dressed in feminine, classic dresses and wears refined jewelry pieces to complete the look. She recently set up a showroom in the city’s Bund area.

My personal style is wearing luxury in a feminine and classic way. Nothing should be too loud or over-dressed. I prefer feminine pieces such as skirts, dresses or capes in colors like black, mazarine and lilac. Instead of simply following the fashion trends, I’ve always kept my very own style.

I usually shop in River Gauche in Paris, where you can find many chic boutiques, for example, Le Bon Marche.

The designer I most admire is Alexander McQueen for his iconic, imaginative and inspirational creations.

The latest item I’ve added to my wardrobe is a pair of Givenchy sunglasses.

My grooming style is pretty simple. I just continue the skin care basics. I believe in taking good care of myself from inside, keeping a good mood and spirit.

My signature perfume is Straight to Heaven. It’s a spicy and unique fragrance from the luxury fragrance house By Kilian.

The best souvenir I brought home is the vintage furniture I found in Paris that I have managed to mix and match in my newly furnished Shanghai house.

The most memorable place I’ve traveled in the past is Italy. I was most impressed by the city of Florence and its wealth of Renaissance art and architecture.

The best thing about living in Shanghai is that we’ve recently opened a pop-up store inside Le Lutin fashion boutique on Tongren Road.

Except Shanghai, I would love to live in Paris. Paris is the city giving me inspiration all the time for my design creations.
