Lil’ Laundry serves delicious food, great brews
THE opening of Lil’ Laundry at Shanghai Centre brings a vibrant after-sunset energy to an area that is mostly packed with business professionals at lunch time.
Lil’ Laundry is a spin-off of Liquid Laundry, the gastro-pub opened by restaurateur Kelley Lee who successfully turned it into a buzzing dining destination and popular brunch spot.
“Lil’ Laundry is kind of the more playful little brother,” Lee says. “We decided to open in the Shanghai Centre because we don’t have any locations in Jing’an District and we have quite a lot of demand from customers in this area.”
Lil’ Laundry exudes a similar vibe as its progenitor but in a more intimate space. It took over the venue formerly occupied by Parisian tea room and patisserie Angelina. The bar area is set up in front of the see-through kitchen. Wooden floors, industrial elements and simplistic modern furniture dominate the dining space. Guests can come for a simple lunch, pop in for a quick drink, enjoy the full tasting menu or spend a delightful evening immersed in the fun, hip vibe.
“We think it’s going to be a great location as we have a huge patio space where we’ve decided to create an outside lawn, complete with a drop in container bar, bean bags, and outdoor DJ capabilities. We’re looking forward to the sunny summer days for drinking on the lawn!” Lee said.
Lil’ Laundry serves the same great craft brews and cocktails as Liquid Laundry, but the food menu is slightly different.
According to Lee: “We’ve updated our brunch menu and changed up the food to make this location a unique destination. We have our own dry ageing room here and we’ll be doing more of a modern smokehouse with meat as the focus. I don’t want customers to think meat is all we serve, because Lil’ Laundry also has updated seafood selections, with some highlights being our fresh imported oysters by the dozen and our Cape Cod seafood bucket.”
On a recent visit, I ordered the Smoked Rabbit and Wild Mushroom Terrine (98 yuan/US$14.20) and Chorizo sliders (88 yuan) to start the meal. Both were delightful. The terrine had a slightly smoked, earthy flavor and the tender texture on warm toast was just delicious. The sliders were an explosion of flavor in every bite. These distinctive burgers are made with beef chorizo mixed with smashed avocado, onion and salsa.
On Friday and Saturday nights, Lil’ Laundry offers a special Weekend Prime Rib Plate. As I visited on a weekday, I opted for the Louisiana BBQ Brisket Plate (178 yuan), a good size for two to share. The tangy Southern BBQ sauce added an extra layer of flavor to the spice rubbed, slow smoked pork brisket and the beautifully presented grilled sweet corn was absolutely delicious.
