Music week hits all the right notes
IF music soothes the savage beast, then Shanghai should be quite mellow right about now.
Shanghai Summer Music Week is ongoing at Cool Docks until Saturday.
Co-organized by the Huangpu District Government, Cool Docks and EOS, the Central Conservatory of Music's college band, the festival is designed to promote different styles of music among the public and raise cultural tastes.
Twelve performances including symphonies, a solo piano concert and outdoor concerts will be staged by 40 musicians from home and abroad.
The venue on Zhongshan Road S. mixes modern and historical elements. As one of the oldest docks in Shanghai, it features many renovated shikumen (stone-gated) buildings that have been refurbished into bars and restaurants.
The shows are free of charge. According to the organizer, a total of 10,000 tickets have been given away.
Some musicians will speak with fans, including renowned conductor Hu Yongyan and Robert Blocker, dean at Yale University's School of Music.
EOS will present a series of symphony and chamber music concerts and provide professional training to student orchestras from Shanghai Datong High School and some middle schools. Each student who receives training will have the opportunity to perform with the musicians.
Since 2006, EOS, led by conductor Hu, has been dedicated to promoting classical music among the public.
"Music education by experts can make music available to children with a music dream. It is an important educational component for children," says Blocker. "It also opens a creative mind for everyone, a vital need in our technological world."
