Ole! Five-flag fiesta fare from Mexico
VIVA la Mexico! Five flags at this fiesta in the Mexico Pavilion.
The music, the wall colors, the lively atmosphere and exotic aromas made the room vibrate with anticipation. I was served a refreshing Mexican soft drink tasting a bit like cranberry juice.
Then came the first of many mouth-watering dishes - tortilla chips and an amazingly tasty guacamole with coriander. The coriander was a new guacamole spice for me but it was perfect. The lovely Guillermo Garcia, who served the food, told me that China and Mexico both use a lot of coriander.
Another thing in common for China, Mexico, and my country Sweden is the importance of the national drink: Sweden has schnapps, China has rice wine and Mexico has tequila. So what would a visit to the Mexico Pavilion be without the ritual of drinking tequila? The salt, the lemon and the shot.
Then came the dishes, rich in fabulous flavor. There was amazing Chilorio, which is pork fried with Mexican herbs, and the even tastier Carne con Chile Colorado, which is beef in chili sauce.
The meat had been simmered for so many hours and was so tender that is almost melted in my mouth. Then it was time for the Taco al Pastor, red pork with a special onion wrapped in corn tortilla and dipped in different sauces.
There was the Chilorio burrito, which is meat and rice wrapped in a flour tortilla, plus a luscious creamy white sauce. My favorite was Quesadilla de res, beef and cheese melted in the flour tortilla - topped with the salsa sauce called Rooster's Beak.
Refreshing Margaritas came in the middle of the food fiesta.
And as a perfect conclusion, I had wonderful Churros, sometimes called Spanish donuts, fried-dough pastry snacks dipped in chocolate, whipped cream and milk caramel. What else can I say?
