Rock concert to fight desertification in China
Join the night of “The Rise of Green Hope” Million Tree Rock Concert on August 23 at Mao Livehouse to donate for planting trees in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Shanghai Roots & Shoots, a non-profit, youth-led global organization, and its Million Tree Project is holding the fifth annual concert with the goal to raise enough to plant an entire 1,000-tree forest this year. Shanghai Daily is a media sponsor for the charity concert, and tickets are available at iDEALShanghai.com/ticket.
The organization was started in 1991 by world-renowned primatologist Jane Goodall and is now active in 100 countries.
“We have lined up wonderful bands, both foreign and local to bring on stage a show too good to miss. Many corporate partners of ours also contributed by donating drinks and raffle prizes,” says Zhong Zhenxi, executive director of Shanghai Roots & Shoots. “More importantly, this is the concert to celebrate the launch of planting our second million trees.”
The Million Tree Project was established in 2007 as a response to the devastating effects of desertification, a process that has already degraded one-third of China’s total landmass.
The project gives concerned citizens a chance to help reverse the effects of desertification in China through tree planting on degraded lands in Tongliao, Inner Mongolia.
“People of all ages and all backgrounds connect to rock ... It is the perfect music genre to have for an environmental cause,” Zhong says. “Environmental problems impact everyone, regardless of age or background. Rock brings them together and through the universal language of music inspires everyone to take action.”
Last year’s rock concert raised 22,200 yuan (US$3,593) in total and that spring, 888 more trees were planted in Tongliao. Thanks to the participants, Shanghai Roots & Shoots reached the one-million-tree milestone that same year.
The night will begin at 8pm with performances by Redic, Sonnet, Mercy and Sorrow, Friend or Foe, Hu Jia Hu Wei and Death to Giants. The emcees will lead everyone through an evening full of talent and special prizes to be won in the raffle prize draw.
“We are volunteering our cause not only because it is a worthy cause but also to raise awareness regarding the Roots & Shoots platform,” says Redic, a US singer and songwriter based in Shanghai. “Planet Earth sustains us in so many ways. Very often we are guilty of taking from Mother Earth with little thought into giving back. This concert is a excellent opportunity to give back and be entertained with incredible music while doing it.”
In 2010, Redic moved to China where he initially performed at various stages at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Since then, Redic has become a familiar fixture at many of Shanghai’s live music venues. He has performed all over China in cities such as Kunming, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Nanjing.
“The highlight of the performance that night is being able to strongly connect with the audience,” Redic says. “That’s always a great feeling when the audience connects with our music even if they are unfamiliar.”
The group is helping reforest land in Tongliao, where a combination of climate change, overgrazing and over-farming have degraded large areas, and now the desertified area is expanding at an astonishing rate, according to the organization’s website.
Sandstorms strike Inner Mongolia and its surrounding areas each spring, destroying local homes and forcing many people to flee their native land. The project will reforest the area in order to revitalize the land and block the sandstorms, the group says.
Each tree planted in Inner Mongolia through this project clears the air of 250 kilograms of carbon dioxide over the course of its life.
