Sailors delivers old British favorite

Fish and chips is one of Britain’s most popular dishes. The simple combination is a guilty pleasure that’s hard to avoid.

Freshly cut potatoes and good quality fish are the foundations. In Shanghai, The Sailors Fish & Chips specializes in what is considered a comfort food by many Western expatriates.

The classic fish and chips set is served on wood board. The big platter (100 yuan/US$16) is for two and includes flounder, pollack and sea bass (one piece of each), squid rings, prawns, sausages and chips.

Pay an extra 50 yuan to upgrade the fish to cod or halibut.

The quality is good and it’s served fresh and hot. The fish is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, but the pollack has a stronger taste than the other two types of fish.

The battered and fried sausage is a plus. The tartar sauce is great with the fish and fries, though the chips are not among the best in Shanghai.

The menu also has home made yogurt (30 yuan) with raisins, dried cranberries and cereal, a prawn sandwich (60 yuan), battered and fried scallops and a selection of salads. The avocado chicken salad has a nice, mild balsamic dressing.

In the evening, Sailors is a good place to hang out with friends over drinks. The everyday brunch menu includes eggs benedict (70 yuan).

For authentic fish and chips, Sailors is tough to beat with its casual atmosphere, good food and attentive service.
