Shake & Bubbles party features art, food

THE monthly Shake & Bubbles party was held at the Art Center of the Renaissance Shanghai Yu Garden Hotel and themed “Night of the Artists.”

The event held on May 28 featured live music, crafted cocktails, fine food and wine, Chinese traditional sugar art, and many painting works from local and international artists. An artist sketched customers at the foyer of the art center, which formed a fantastic picture themselves.

Macaroons were presented together with oil paints brushes and artist’s models on the table. All of the layouts perfectly fit to the artworks on the wall.

“Art appreciation is something which is growing in popularity in China and our hotel heavily features art. Art can come in many forms and we found it was a perfect way to showcase all at this Shake & Bubbles event,” said Paul Gill, the hotel’s general manager.

Edward Zhou, the hotel’s new director of food and beverage, designed a creative fusion menu of Eastern and Western dishes for the event; beverages and food highlights featured margarita with sea salt foam, beef root marinated salmon, Vietnamese beef rolls, fresh scallop and spicy Sichuan-style dandan noodles. An eclectic selection to complement the artworks is on display.

“When we think of the theme ‘Shake & Bubbles,’ the elements of color and rhythm came to my mind,” Edward said.

To realize the perfect feelings of colorful and rhythmic, Edward designed the special “brush washing cocktail” for the night — dry gin, sprite, blackcurrant and lime. The way to make this cocktail is like Chinese painting — washing the brush in the cocktail after dipping in green lime and dark purple blackcurrant juices to create your uniquely flavored cocktail.

“Strong color contrast and creative modern Chinese art elements — that’s what we would like to present to our customers,” Edward added. Edward with up to 20 years’ experience in F&B joined Renaissance Yu Garden recently.

“My inspiration for beverage and food comes from my travel experience and my passion to discover. The event of this evening enables us to showcase another unique facet of our hotel,” Edward said.

Shake & Bubbles events are held every month at a different Marriott hotel in the city. The events are designed for guests to experience some of the best hotels in Shanghai and network with business professionals.

“The party tonight is fantastic and I really enjoy the food, beverages and art works around,” said Situ Huijuan, who attended her first Shake & Bubbles, also a local art collector. “It really gives the flavor of what Shanghai is today — fashionable, modern, young, vibrant and artistic.”

“For us it is fantastic, bringing new people to our hotel and showing them what interesting discoveries they can experience,” the general manager said.

“The Renaissance brand is all about discovery; we have also held events where we have showcased art at an entry level to get people interested in discovering art,” Paul added. “Live life to discover.”
