Shanghai fully loaded with nacho choices

Nachos are a perfect summer comfort food. Paired with an icy margarita on a sunny day, a hearty plate of crispy tortilla chips covered with melted cheddar, salsa, jalapeno peppers and other flavorful toppings can be hard to pass up.

According to many accounts, nachos originated in Piedras Negras, a Mexican city near the Texas border, where they were first created by local restaurant owner Ignacio Anaya in the early 1940s. Since then, this simple culinary delight has become not only a staple of Tex-Mex cuisine but a dish enjoyed by diners around the world.

Today, nachos can be found on menus across Shanghai. Here is your guide to some of the city’s best places to sample this quintessential summer treat.

Shanghai Brewery

This micro-brewery, pub and restaurant serves up an array of international fare, including dishes from Mexico.

For 75 yuan (US$12), the brewery’s El Nachos Grande comes heaped with salsa, cheese, sour cream, olives and jalapenos. Chili minced beef can be added for an additional 15 yuan.

The menu also features soups, salads, grilled items and pizzas.

Happy hour runs from 2pm to 8 pm on weekdays: micro-brewed beers start at 20 yuan, cocktails start at 25 yuan.
