Summer a fine time for sports, but take care

GET out of the air-conditioned room, put on your sports gear and do some exercises in summer.

Summer is a sporting season, and experts point out that a little bit of sunshine can improve skin health, enhance people’s adaptability to high temperatures and boost metabolism.

Swimming might be the first choice for many people, an activity that burns calories and cools you off in the water. It is easy on the joints, supports your weight, builds muscular strength and endurance and improves cardiovascular fitness. It is also a sport that you can do safely into old age.

Other water sports that conducive to summer include boating, sailing and water polo.

Mountain hiking is another good summer exercise. Don’t be too hard on yourself and just keep your own pace. Take some fresh air in the mountains, enjoy the woods and you can keep entirely to yourself while climbing.

It’s better to exercise in the morning or after 4pm, when the temperature is not too high.

Be aware not to exercise too much or spend too much time in the sun because the UV rays can burn your skin and increase your long-term risk of skin cancer.

To prevent sunstroke, remember to drink enough water, and choose light-colored, loose clothes.

Also watch air-pollution readings. On days where the PMI exceeds 150, healthy people begin to experience ill effects. Breathing deeply  in polluted air exacerbates harm to the lungs and can cause long-term damage, health experts say.
