'SuperNanny' TV show on tap
PARENTS with child-rearing problems will soon be able to turn for advice to the Chinese version of the popular UK reality series "SuperNanny."
Applications are being accepted through the end of the month. Parents with children up to age 12 can apply to appear on the show and receive professional advice from a veteran nanny; expat families are welcome, too. Eight families from around China will be chosen.
The first season of eight episodes - one for each family - will air weekly on CCTV-2 and ICS starting in December. English subtitles will be provided.
Many single children in one-child families are both spoiled and under pressure to succeed academically.
Many discipline problems arise and many of these children and young people lack independence, consideration for others and good communication skills.
Most parents work and they typically turn babysitting over to their in-laws who often indulge children and are not familiar with modern child-rearing approaches. On the other hand, Chinese "tiger moms" are famous for strict discipline.
On "SuperNanny," a light-hearted show, parents will be taught how to better relate to their children and discipline more effectively.
Since its debut in 2004, the UK reality show has been produced and broadcast around the world. Different, culture-specific versions have been very successful.
American talk show host Oprah Winfrey has called the show "fascinating" and "required viewing."
"SuperNanny" will be the first child-rearing show in China and Ge Gong, one of the ICS producers, says it will offer young parents a lot of practical advice based on long experience.
"The Chinese version (of "SuperNanny") will be strictly based on the format of the original, but it will solve the major problems confronting local parents in educating their kids," he adds.
