Suzhou’s tasty snacks available in Shanghai

The ancient city of Suzhou, in neighboring Jiangsu Province, provides not only a feast for the eyes with its whitewashed houses and tree-lined canals, but also a feast of gastronomic treats in its eateries, bakeries and little stands and stalls hidden in side streets and lanes.

Suzhou’s delicacies tend toward the sweet side while retaining the ingredients’ natural flavors.

For those who don’t have time to go there, some items are available at Shanghai markets, such as these at Carrefour:

  YJN Biluochun Tea

Price: 41.2 yuan (US$6.83)/200g

Description: Biluochun tea is a famous green tea originally grown in the Dongting mountain region near the province’s Tai Lake. It is renowned for its delicate appearance, fruity taste, floral aroma and showy white hairs, and is highly regarded by Chinese tea experts.

The name means “green snail spring” because it is a green tea that is rolled into a tight spiral, and is picked in early spring. Only the tender tips of the leaves are used in tea making process, which gives the tea a fresh smell and texture.

  Qian shi (gorgon fruit)

Price: 78 yuan (US$12.64)/500g

Description: Qian shi, or gorgon fruit, comes from an annual water plant native to East Asia. In traditional Chinese medicine, it has such uses as strengthening the spleen, stopping diarrhea, stabilizing the kidneys and treating urinary frequency. It can be cooked with rice and different beans as sweet congee or porridge or as an ingredient in chicken soup.

  Suzhou-style dried, preserved plums

Price: 19.4 yuan (US$3.14)/ 200g

Description: In Suzhou, there are more than 160 varieties of sweetmeats. Dried, preserved plums are plums that have been preserved by treatment with salt water. Suzhou-style dried plums have a thick pulp and are neither too sweet nor too sour.

  Zuming dried bean curd

Price: 3.5 yuan (57 US cents)/90g

Description: Dried tofu is little chewy, and it known by some as “vegetarian ham.” Seasonings are added as it’s made such as salt, fennel, pepper, anise and ginger. It is tasty and can be kept for a long time. Sweet dried tofu is a specialty of Suzhou.

  Yedacheng Suzhou-style mooncake

Price: 10.9 yuan (US$1.77)/350g 

Description: Suzhou-style mooncakes are known by their layers of flaky dough. It has delicious filling with generous amount of sugar and lard.

The crust is made by rolling together layers of oily dough and flour. It is similar to puff pastry and it’s high in calories, so some enjoy it in small quantities. Su-style mooncakes have a history of more than 1,000 years.
