TCM course a hit in Maltese school
Local traditional Chinese medicine doctors promoting a TCM therapy and herbal knowledge course at a Maltese university has proved to be one of the most popular classes at the school of learning.
Treatment and lectures on TCM-based healthcare are extremely welcome among local people, said Dr Wang Xiao from the Longhua Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in Shanghai. And under a joint initiative between Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the University of Malta, a TCM center has been established at the latter.
Longhua Hospital is the center’s administrator and dispatches doctors, offers medical treatment and clinical education and training for an acupuncture program at the University of Malta.
Doctors give lectures on TCM in the center, which attracts many local residents, while patients visiting the center’s outpatient department also increased as a consequence.
TCM doctors also teamed up with foreign teachers to give a field herbs course to local students in the Argotti Botanical Garden at the university.
Designed to explore the history, evolution and application of Chinese herbs from different perspectives, Wang and his colleagues provided several examples, pictures, videos and class discussions with professional Chinese and Western references.
“It is quite difficult for cross-cultural teaching in English and Latin,” said Wang, who set up a public WeChat account to push popular science articles on local medicinal plants similar to herbs in China.
The course is popular with not only healthcare students but those in finance, sports and several other industries. It is ranked second among similar course turnouts in the university of Malta this year.
A student named Marco said the course not only changed his understanding of the herb, but also his ideas about ingredients and the use of drugs.
“I’m obsessed with interesting content,” another student Richel said.
