‘Thai with a twist’ at new Kerry Center cafe

The casual dining outlet Greyhound Cafe recently opened its doors at Jing’an Kerry Center, making it the third restaurant by the Thai chain in Shanghai.

Greyhound started out in Bangkok and aims at bringing creative Thai-fusion to Jing’an Temple area. With its sleek black-and-greyish industrial vibe and bare light bulbs, the branch fits right into the area, although that might be by chance, as the owner focused on staying true to the chain’s original style.

Interior design and music, for instance, have been chosen to recreate the same ambience as the cafe in Bangkok.

The restaurant defines itself as “Thai with a twist”, although some of the dishes sound neither Italian nor Thai, like the Fried Chicken Wings for 58 yuan (US$9). Rather than taking a Thai dish and putting an American twist on it, this classic American favorite got a little Thai twist to it as it is marinated in fish sauce, an ingredient used in almost all Thai dishes, which makes them juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside.

The flavor is rich, and the sauce preserves the tenderness of the meat. Easy to eat with your hands and to split, the wings make for a perfect starter for a small group.

The fresh Avocado Salad with Rocket leaves (88 yuan) is a mix of boiled shrimp, tomato and avocado, blended with fresh cream on top of arugula. A touch of wasabi adds a refreshing kick to the dish, without overpowering the flavor of the greens.

As for the mains, the Minced Pork with sweet basil and hot chili (98 yuan) is a popular dish across Thailand, where it is often described as tasty comfort food. If you want to opt for a traditional Thai recipe rather than those with a modern, creative twist, this dish served with fried egg, rice and clear soup is your best bet. Every bite feels light and soft, and the delicious, spicy taste of chili and fresh basil takes you right to the heart of Thailand.

Another ideal choice for lunch is the Buffalo burger (88 yuan), which combines a large piece of juicy beef, fresh mozzarella with some Thai basil, giving it a balanced, not too greasy taste.

The Thai-fusion restaurant offers a number of “Italian” options, including pasta and paninis. The fettuccine (98 yuan), which come with seared scallops and asparagus are a little too oily and rich with cream. Although the Italian dishes add variety to the menu, we recommend that you stick to the roots and opt for the more convincing Thai classics.

The crepe cakes are freshly made each day. The indulgent coconut crepe cake (68 yuan) is a delicious layering of light and thin crepes, thick slices of coconut meat and fresh cream.

Other desserts include the signature Thai mango sticky rice and chow kuay (black grass jelly) and imported, exotic fruits from Thailand.
