The Killers make good alternative for holiday

The week of the upcoming National Day holiday should be a good one for rock fans as American alternative rock band The Killers is coming to Shanghai for a concert at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on their very first China tour.
Being part of the post-punk revival movement, the band draws many of their influences from music styles of the 1980s.
The Killers’ sound was described by one critic as a mix between the “pop styles of British music and the fuzz of modern indie rock.”
The band was formed in 2001 and 2002 in Las Vegas and broke out in 2003 with their smash hit “Mr Brightside.” In 2004, their debut album “Hot Fuss” brought them huge mainstream success and critical acclaim, and they have gone on to multi-platinum album sales and worldwide fame.
Fans of The Killers were disappointed by the cancellation of its Asia tour three years ago due to the death of the mother of frontman Brandon Flowers. But now, the buzz is growing as their Shanghai concert date approaches.
“Somebody told me they are coming to Shanghai and I can’t believe it’s true,” says Yang Chunhou, a 28-year-old Shanghai native. “I’ve followed them for years and their songs have accompanied me during my university days.”
Playing China has been somewhat of a dream for the band members, too.
“It’s quite special. It’s one of those things where, when you’re sweating it out in the garage or in the studio and someone says, ‘Let’s play China some day.’ It seems so far away. So it’s nice to finally be over in that part of the world to share the party,” drummer Ronnie Vannucci told concert organizer Gehua Live Nation.
“I’ve always heard about China throughout my life because my mom lived there; she lived all around China growing up and I think I’m going to bring her on tour with us. It should be fun,” Vannucci says.
Besides Vannucci, and Flowers on lead vocals and keyboards, the other two band members are guitarist Dave Keuning and bassist Mark Stoermer.
For the Shanghai concert, the band will perform several songs from “Battle Born,” their latest album, released in 2012.
“Every record is a proving ground. We feel like we need to keep upping the ante with every new one we put out,” Vannucci says. “We’ve got no interest in resting on our laurels.”
It is an album that incorporates elements from each of the records that came before it.
“I feel like there are a lot of live moments on this album, more than we’ve ever had before,” says Flowers, who was inspired to form a band after seeing Oasis play live.
“I feel like people are going to be able to relate to and understand these songs. Pound for pound, this is our strongest record, and I’m really excited about it. We’re starting to feel more comfortable being what we are. And we’re proud of what we are.”
On October 1, the band plays at the MasterCard Center in Beijing. Their Asia tour comes after finishing a tour of America and Europe this summer.
