Top chamber music group to play

SWISS Piano Trio, a leading chamber music ensemble, will play on July 21 in Shanghai.

The concert will feature Beethoven's Piano Trio in D Major, also titled "Ghost," Martin Wettstein's "Alpentangomania" and Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No. 2 in C Minor.

The trio is composed of pianist Martin Lucas Staub, violinist Angela Golubeva and cellist Sebastien Singer.

Founded in 1998, the group has been widely recognized. The trio won first prize at the 2005 International Johannes Brahms Competition in Austria.

The ensemble has traveled around the world in the past decade and is a regular guest at a number of important music festivals such as Ottawa Chamberfest, the Menuhin Festival Gstaad and MusicFest Vancouver. The trio has released recordings of works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Dvorak. They also play music by composers such as Paul Juon, Frank Martin and Daniel Schnyder.

For its 10th anniversary in 2008, Swiss Piano Trio created music festival Kammermusik Bodensee in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. Staub is the artistic director.

"Ghost" is one of Beethoven's best known works of chamber music while "Alpentangomania" is a piece by a Swiss composer Wettstein, who is based in Zurich and mainly writes for chamber ensembles. Mendelssohn's piano trio was composed in 1845 and dedicated to violinist Louis Spohr, a highly regarded German musician and composer from the 19th century.

Meanwhile, young pianist Wang Lu, who was once considered by People's Daily to be one of the "top 10 promising stars in Chinese music scene in the 21st century," will stage a recital in Shanghai tomorrow.

Program includes Bach-Petri's "Sheep May Safely Graze," Beethoven's "Piano Sonata in C Minor Op 13 ("Pathetique")" and "Piano Sonata in F Minor Op 57 ("Appasionata")," Mozart's "Variation in C Major," Schumann's "Kinderszenen Op 15" and Chopin's "Barcarolle Op 60" and "Polonaise in A Flat Major" ("Heroic").
