Turkish master shares taste for adventure

Ahmet Bilgen

Head chef at The Fireplace, Hyatt Regency Suzhou

Born and raised in Turkey, Ahmet Bilgen is blessed with both a natural curiosity and a well-honed culinary palate.

Growing up at the crossroads of Eastern and Western culture, Bilgen’s very first mentor in the art of cooking was his mother, who inspired him to becoming a chef at the tender age of 14.

“Cooking is an art,” Bilgen says, adding that his greatest joys in the kitchen come when a menu or a dish inspires memories among diners.

Having worked in kitchens around the world, including those in Barcelona, Dubai, Istanbul and Moscow, Bilgen loves sharing his talent and his passion for cooking with every one of his guests.

“Being a chef is not only about cooking. A chef is an ambassador of quality living who elevates the essence of cooking in every dish through a respect for each and every ingredient being used. Therefore, a chef is naturally a person who loves to share and impart a story in every dish,” Bilgen adds.

With a growing fan base, Bilgen is known as a passionate advocate of fine dining and a fantastic story teller. His love for culinary adventure also means that guests often lose track of time when they are in his restaurant.

The Fireplace, with its wood-paneled walls and European window blinds, is an Italian trattoria that transports guests to a place of relaxation with its warm and cozy decor.

At the restaurant’s marble bar, one can taste the signature smoked whiskey sour while appreciating the Mediterranean mosaic on the wall or having a casual chat with one of our friendly bartenders.

Be sure to sample a few dishes recommended by Bilgen, including the lobster bisque, home-aged 45 day Tomahawk steak, homemade pizzas and pastas and Premium grilled seafood plate. These are just a few of the favorites that diners won’t soon forget.
